Imagine this: you're a West Coast citrus grower in the 1880's. The brand-new transcontinental rail network has been established, which means you can finally ship your fruits and vegetables across the country. What are you going to do to make your product stand out from the others?
 

The answer for nearly 75 years was crate art. These eye-catching paper labels were used to advertise and differentiate the various fruit and vegetable brands. The commissioned labels were primarily printed in San Francisco using stone lithography with up to 12 color inks. The iconic artwork started in California and eventually spread as far as Japan, Chile, and New Zealand.

Sadly, these beautiful art pieces were deemed archaic as early as the 1940's. Due to World War II, printed cardboard boxes replaced the ornate wooden and metal crates. Most paper labels were destroyed or placed into storage.

Crate art is important for a number of reasons. It is endlessly fascinating that one could create such gorgeous art to advertise some of the most mundane products. Crate art also hearkens back to a time when artistic license and high-quality trumped the chasing of dollars and the race to the bottom mentality.
