What I'm Spinning #2: The Beach Boys' Smiley Smile

The Beach Boys' Smiley Smile is probably the first lo-fi album ever. Take everything you knew about The Beach Boys and throw it out the window. The album features super sparse production and highlights the insane vocals of Brian Wilson and company.

In 1967, Brian Wilson was working on his follow up to Pet Sounds, which is basically the perfect pop album. Unfortunately, expectations for the follow up were so high that it broke Brian's brain. This is the fascinating result.

This is an album I discovered in high school. It's the perfect album for a cool autumn evening. Grab a cup of hot cocoa and let your mind wander to the unsettling and slightly unappealing sounds of congos and a Baldwin organ
